Merry Christmas & Happy New 2017

The Christmas tree is all dressed, the fireplace is warming the saloon and I'm enjoying the calm as my dear family now is fast asleep. This is a nice contrast to the last couple of days of inspiring but intense activities. This weekend we moved from the hectic big city pulse of Stockholm to the calm woods of Bergslagen. Me and my beloved wife Therese are now changing course in life to focus even more on Jonas Vildmark and the outdoors. As a natural step in our business development we have been looking for a suitable homestead for some time now. And now we have gotten the opportunity to live in the beautiful villa Lienshyttans Herrgård in Riddarhyttan Sweden. This shift is a wonderful final to a fantastic year for us and Jonas Vildmark. 2016 offered inspiring events like; Vildmarksmässan 2016Ystad Täljfestival 2016Naked and AfraidBushcraftfestivalen 2016, nice courses, a lot of hunting, buying forest in Hälsingland and last but not least; getting to buy the inspiring place Lienshyttans Herrgård.

With these words from a quiet and frosty Riddarhyttan I want to wish you and your dearest a peaceful Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The Jonas Vildmark plans for 2017 will for instance offer you news like; Hunting SchoolBushcraft weekends, lectures at the Vildmarksmässan, exciting homesteading and the Bushcraftfestivalen 2017.

Hope to see you soon. Take care of each other during the upcoming holidays and let your heart be generous to those in need.

Hultafors Outdoor Knives - Vapentidningen No.9 - 2016

My dear colleges at the Vapentidningen have once again crafted a top notch magazine; the last issue of this year, number 9 - 2016.
My contribution to this issue is a big article about Hultafors new Outdoor Knife series consisting of four different models; Outdoor Knife OK1Outdoor Knife OK4Ropr Knife RKR GH and Rescue Knife OKR GH. The knives are based on Hultafors' erlyer craftsman knives, but with a bigger outdoor focus. These are nice knives for different ourdoorsy activities and the model OK1 got to be the series' personal favorite of mine during the test.

Inside the same issue you'll also find a small article from my side regarding the pleasent event EDC-träffen 2016, wish resently was arranged in Stockholm by Knivshop. Among others the folder Kizer Ki4468 Intrepid was seen at the meet and later this Spring you'll be able to read a review inside Vapentidningen on that  knife.

I wish you all a pieceful Lucia Holiday with lots of reading. Please let me know if you have any feedback on my articles.

Casström Woodsman - Vapentidningen No.8 - 2016

Any day now a new issue of the magazine Vapentidningen will pop up in a store near you. This time I write about one of the latest knife models from Casström; the Woodsman. It's an interesting project in cooperation with the English knife maker Roger Harrington of Bison Bushcraft. This is a handy and compact knife with an extremely sturdy full tang blade of a thickness of 4,3 mm.

As always I'd also would like to highlight some of the other interesting articles inside the magazine. This time I got extra fund of Johan Ljungné's article on how to zero a rifle and Henrik Kalling's article about long range shooting with caliber 9x19 and his test of the caplock pistol Pedersoli Kentucky in caliber .45.

I hope you'll get a pleasant moment reading by the wood stove while the November snow slowly falls outside the cabin window.

Hunters Exam

As Hunting is a part of Bushcraft we want to welcome you to take your Hunting License via Jonas Vildmark's Hunting School.
By getting knowledge about the fauna, nature's cycles and wildlife management you'll enrich you outdoor life tremendously. As a Hunter your outdoor activities enter a new dimension of awareness at the same time as you pass on the hunting and gathering culture's ecological and sustainable way of thinking.

Jonas Vildmark offers a unique hunting school mixing the traditional hunter's education of The Swedish Hunters Association's (Svenska Jägareförbundet and Jägarnas Riksförbund) with old and new bushcraft skills. Based upon the course literature of the Hunters Associations we offer a five day intensive course.

Five Day Intensive Course
During a five day long education, with the possibility of overnight stay, we cover all of the subjects of Jonas Vildmark's Hunting School; hunting history, hunting ethics, wildlife, tracking, navigation, bushcraft, safety and first aid, game dressing, gun safety, shooting and the hunting and gathering culture. The week then finishes off with a written exam and a shooting exam with the aim of you receiving your Hunting License.
We want to emphasize the importance of understanding that; no one can be a fully skilled Hunter after just a five day intensive course. It's very important that you study the course literature thoroughly prior to the course start to get the best conditions for succeeding on your final exams. You should see the five day intensive course as a first step into the wonderful world of hunting where there's always something new and inspiring to learn.

Welcome Beautiful October

Place: Sala kommun, Sweden
Time: 1 day in October

Finally the Autumn is here with it's fresh air and sparkling colors. This Saturday is the first of October wish means it opens up for more game to hunt in the Swedish hunting season.

We hope to see some roe deer and wild boar but it'll turn out to be a pure moose day. During the day we saw seven majestic moos, one of them a real big one with 18 spikes in it's crown (!). This is a nice indication of what's to come now when the moose season is about to start (moose hunting premiere in Sweden's southern parts; second Monday in October).

Thanks for an amazing Fall day in the beautiful October sun.

The Swedish Axe - Vapentidningen No.6 - 2016

Perfect timing!.. After an fantastic weekend at the Bushcraftfestivalen 2016 and some deer hunting the latest issue of  the Swedish magazine Vapentidningen pops up in the mail. This issue feels extra special for us as it contains an article based on our project The Swedish Axe.

Since 2012 I've been studying the inspiring Swedish axe culture. Within the project I've visited the three big live and kicking Swedish axe manufacturers (Hultafors, Gränsfors and Wetterlings) together with the axe handle manufacturer Smedbergs. In this three page long magazine article I summarize the Swedish axe culture in general, the three biggest manufacturer's history and take a closer look at three different mid size axe models. Of course everything about The Swedish Axe doesn't fit on just three pages so also feel free to surf this webpage for more stuff on axes. Also use #theswedishaxe  in social medias to see more. Our courses ofcourse also contain our knowledge about The Swedish Axe.

Besides the article The Swedish Axe this latest issue of Vapentidningen contain interesting articles like; Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather SS (Erland Gunnarsson), 9 mm Parabellum (Åke Nordin) and the Swedish Armed Forces advanced combat shooting training (Erik Bjjälkvall).

You can see the pdf-version of my axe article by clicking HERE.

To all of you I had the pleasure of meeting in person at last weekend's Bushcraftfestival; I want to send my warmest thanks for helping us creating a memorable and historical first issue of the international bushcraft festival in Sweden. I also hope you all had a great start to the hunting season. Take the opportunity to read Vapentidningen in between your hunting sessions, take care and I hope to see you soon again, perhaps at the Bushcraftfestivalen 2017.

Nice Start to the Hunting Season - Fox Hunting in Bogesund

Place: BogesundVaxhoms kommun, Sweden
Coordinates: Lat: 59.41233, Lon: 18.23497
Time: 1 day in August

Had a beautiful start to my hunting season this year; a peaceful evening of still hunting fox out in Bogesund. With less than a week to go before the Bushcraftfestivalen 2016 starts it feels great to take some time off from all the planning to just sit in the woods, listen to the quiet and look for wildlife. Although no foxes showed this evening I had great company; two nice roe deer bucks gave good indications of what's to come at the buck premiere the 16th of August. Also four beautiful female deer visited my hunting tower of the evening (tower No.82).

I want to send a big thanks to Bogesunds Jakt and the hunting leader Joachim for a well arranged hunt. Feels nice that hunting season finally are here.

Victorinox Hiker - Vapentidningen No.5 - 2016

When getting home after The Ludvika Knife Week the Postman had delivered a steaming hot new issue of the Vapentidningen (No.5 - 2016). Soon the magazine also will be available in stores. I hope you'll be able to read all the interesting articles inside this issue. My contribution this time is an article on our dearly red little everyday hero; The Swiss Army Knife. In the article you can see one of my favorite EDC's; the Victorinox Hiker No.14613.

Victorinox produce a wide range of models and variations of these. All to be able to offer a tailored set up of features in each product. I pick the Hiker as I want a slim folder/multitool equipped with a saw and I also prefer a cross head screwdriver instead of a corkscrew.

Some of the other interesting articles inside this issue of Vapentidningen are; Henrik Kalling's Sig Sauer P226 MK25 test, Tobias Hassel's Beretta 692 Sporting test and Erland Gunnarsson's & Elso Olsson's lovely "summer place air gun" test.

As always; I appreciate any feedback on my magazine article. What are your experiences of Victorinox, and  do you have any adventurous stories to share about the Hiker? Keep up the Summer mode with help of this new issue of the magazine. Inside the issue after that (No.6 - 2016) you'll be able to read my longed for article about the project The Swedish Axe.

Knivveckan i Ludvika - The Ludvika Knife Week 2016

Place: KnivveckanAkvariet Naturum, Ludvika, Sweden
Coordinates: 60.154898, 15.186152 (lat, lon)
Time: 2 days in July

History and Future
Since 1988 the event Knivveckan (The Knife Week) has been arranged in the peaceful little town of Ludvika Sweden. As a knife collector I've always heard good things of this knife festival but unfortunately I've never had the chance of visiting. So this year it was about time I got myself there. The passionate project leaders of the event; Mr. Anders and Mrs. Ingegerd Höök have earlier announced that they are stepping down as key persons in the coordination of the Knife Week. Therefore the future of the event is unknown at this moment. Later this evening (2016-07-15) The Svensk Knivförening's (The Swedish Knife Guild) yearly meeting will be held where the subject of them picking up the flag of the knife festival. either way I'm guessing the event will go on, but perhaps in another context and place. A motivated knife festival friend page has been created on Facebook and there are actors in the business that have been shoving their interest in arranging the event in the future. It will be interesting to see what will happen.

A beautiful view of the bay of Ludvika to wake up to

After a peaceful drive up to Ludvika and a good nights sleep on the back of my pick-up truck; I dived into the event area. Exhibitors, knife makers and salesmen of materials like; wood, steel and leather were mingling and networking in a pleasant way. For the fresh knife collector there are a lot of old price worthy knives to find (not the least the old and faithful Moras) and for the more advanced collector there were a big number of amazing piece of work to admire and invest in.

Some of the masterpieces on display in the Nordic Championship in Knife Making.
One of my favorites was Alf Thorsen's knife No.B14 (second knife in the lower row)

Inspiring Meetings
Some of the nice people I got to hang out with during my visit was; Seved Hjelm (also now ready for the Bushcraftfestivalen), Sven Thunberg (Njutånger), Mikael Hansen (Denmark) and Carl Michael (Gävle). Göran Enocksson and GEN-Smide was for me a new acquaintance with some impressive products, not the least his great looking axes.

Göran Enocksson with his interesting gutters

Göran Enocksson's beautiful axes

I had to hold on to my valet and control myself not to empty it when seeing all the beautiful knives at the festival. I succeeded in staying disciplined; as I only invested in one new knife. My trophy from this years event got to be a nice little neck knife from Pentti Pirttioja (Smedjebacken). A sweet little new friend that I will come back to later on here on the blog.

Pentti Pittioja; knife maker from Smedjebacken Sweden

My new little friend from Pentti Pirttioja

Besides networking, market, exhibition, and the Nordic Championship in Knife Making the Knife Week 2016 offered a number of speakers. I listened to Krister Pettersson from the company Uddeholm Svenska AB manufacturing steel. Krister presented the company's different products and their co operations with a number of well known knife manufacturers such as; BenchmadeSpydercoLionsteelKershaw and FirstEdge. Especially interesting was to hear about the company's development of the new nitrogen laminated steel Vanax SuperClean. My guess is; we'll be hearing a lot about it in the future.

Thanks for Now
I wish to say thank you to the town of Ludvika and to the event Ludvika Knife Week for a couple of really great days. I'd like to send a special warm thanks to the Höök family for contributing so much to the knife culture of Sweden through the years arranging this event. I'm looking forward to follow and participate in the future of The Knife Week.
